Coronavirus (COVID-19)
This is a very worrying time for all of us, with the UK bracing for increased numbers of people with COVID-19. You will see at the bottom of this page my blogs on different aspects. This page will be regularly updated and new blogs added below when we have new information.
I support an evidence-based approach to the crisis. The government has said they are following this approach and I support that – we all want the government to have the best approach. Along with colleagues from all political parties I am carefully scrutinising all their announcements and offering suggestions.
I have raised a number of questions about the management of the crisis and support for people suffering its knock-on effects. I will continue to bring up your concerns and questions, through speaking in Parliament, working with our Shadow Department of Health and writing to ministers. Please let me know if you have a specific matter you would like me to raise.
This is a tragedy and my thoughts go out to the many people who will be affected by this terrifying illness. And its effects will extend far beyond health. Many people in Bristol are concerned that their livelihoods will be affected by the necessary precautions. For instance, the COVID-19 Pandemic has shown us how important it is for everyone to have the right to a decent home, as the Shadow Secretary of State for Housing I am leading on this for the Labour Party.
In addition to following the public health response, I am working to ensure that government properly supports local businesses, organisations and individuals, including freelancers and workers on zero hours contracts.
Despite the often bleak news, I am heartened by the way that many of you are contacting me with concerns for those most vulnerable. Please continue to look after each other and stay in touch.
