Since 9th January Labour called on the government at least 250 times to introduce a levy on the windfall profits made by oil and gas companies to fund support for people struggling with fuel bills now.

We forced voted 3 times on this. Each time not a single Tory MP backed our proposals, making excuses ranging from claiming oil and gas companies were struggling, despite their record profits, to saying a windfall tax is ‘un-conservative’ despite it being used by previous Tory governments.

Labour has been calling for this windfall tax for months. Every day the government delayed cost households dearly.

Whilst we welcome the government adopting Labour’s policy the country needs far more to tackle the cost of living, energy and climate crises urgently.

I call on the government to bring in an emergency budget and a radical plan for energy, investing in renewables, insulating homes and protecting energy security as well as creating good, well paying jobs.
