I have called on the government to get a grip on their treatment of modern slavery victims as it emerged that the Home Office have been keeping victims of this horrific crime in immigration detention.

This is another example to support my concern that the Home Office’s systems for managing cases are meaning that those that should be receiving help from the government after traumatic and exploitative experiences are, in fact, suffering under an inflexible and chaotic immigration system.

I asked the then-Home Office minister whether, instead of denying that the Home Office kept statistics on the numbers of people who had been victims of modern slavery on their case load, they should have a policy of making sure they collect this data. If it is ever to re-earn the public’s trust, the Home Office must be honest about its failings and understand the scale of the problems that have opened up under this Tory government.

Government's shame as victims of modern slavery held in immigration detention
