The Tories’ tax system is unfair, disproportionately burdening poorer people. The poorest 10% of people pay 42% of their income in taxes, compared to 34% for the richest 10%, according to the Equality Trust.

Last week I put this to Treasury Minister Mel Stride, who replied with some irrelevant statistics on the contribution of the highest earners. This misses the point – the tax system should be balanced to benefit everyone. It should not be skewed in favour of the rich.
