We defeated the government’s Withdrawal Agreement again, this time by a majority of 58 votes. Today’s result, 286 to 344, was another massive defeat for this unpopular Brexit plan.

As a Labour Whip I get to be a Teller, which usually means counting the votes. Today I was very proud to be ‘Teller for the Noes’. Because we won, I was responsible for both counting the votes and reading out the result.

On Monday we will have to redouble our efforts to work on the proposals for next steps. At the moment the most popular options in Parliament are a customs Union (a form of close relationship with the EU, a so-called ‘soft’ exit) and a further public vote on any deal.

It should be clear to everyone by now, including the Prime Minister, that she will never get support for this deal, no matter how many times she puts it to a vote.
