It may be incompetence or self-delusion, but the government seems happy to ignore the holes in our laws which are likely to emerge when we leave the EU.

Today I asked Brexit Minister Chris Heaton-Harris and then Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom the same question, because the first answer I got wasn’t an answer. Frustratingly neither was the second and they must know that I am right. There simply is not enough time.

The PM gave everyone the impression that all the necessary EU legislation and regulations would be easily transferred into UK law with her EU Withdrawal act. This was never the case and the government’s failure to do this – covering everything from air pollution to licensing of vets – and to get the necessary new laws through Parliament and properly scrutinised in time – means that we run a very high risk of not having a functioning set of laws at 11.01pm on Friday 29th March.

The exchange with Chris Heaton-Harris is below. You can watch the question to the Leader of the House here.
