Today my friend and colleague Tulip Siddiq made an excellent case for a change in the law to end indefinite detention of asylum seekers.
If you are a criminal in prison, you count down the days until free. Detained asylum seekers count the days up, because have no idea when they might be released. In my role as chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Refugees, I have heard some horrifying stories about how traumatised asylum seekers have been locked up for months or years, with no light at the end. In many cases, their only crime was to flee torture and persecution.
I was very pleased to see Tulip’s 10 Minute Rule Bill pass this first hurdle and go on to its second reading in January. This is something the APPG for Refugees and I have been campaigning for some time, so will be watching this closely.
