Today in Parliament, I challenged the Minister of State for Energy to do more to support investment in renewable energy technology – and in particular wave and tidal energy.
We have enormous untapped potential to generate clean, sustainable power through wave and tidal energy – to say nothing of the jobs that can be created in this field here in our region!
The government have been parading their green credentials this week as part of Green GB week. They hope this will be “an annual week designed to highlight the opportunities clean growth offers the UK and raise understanding of how business and the public can contribute to tackling climate change.”
A laudable aim. But as ever, the Tories’ rhetoric doesn’t match their actions.
They’re cutting investment in clean energy off at the knees, and pulling government support for major innovative infrastructure projects such as the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon.
Renewable energy technology has enormous potential to transform the way we power our homes and businesses, and to offset the horrors of climate change. But this technology needs government investment to get it to the point of being commercially viable. Investment that this government has thus far failed to provide.
