The military build-up on Ukraine’s borders is alarming. For Ukrainians, it must be terrifying not knowing when – or how – the situation will be resolved. I know some Bristolians will be worried about friends or family in Ukraine.I want to reassure them I will do what I can to help get them and their loved ones to safety.

Ukrainians want a democratic future and I believe they should be able to determine their own political destiny, free of Russian interference or threats.

The Labour Party is pushing the government to do everything it can to de-escalate this crisis, which has led to thousands of deaths since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. We believe the message to President Putin must be firm and unambiguous, stating the UK is committed to the security of our allies and the sovereignty of Ukraine.

In the event of an attack on Ukraine, I believe the UK must respond immediately with severe and extensive sanctions, targeting key figures and key sectors in the Russian economy, without gaps or loopholes. And this needs to happen in partnership with our allies.

British nationals currently in Ukraine

If you are a British citizen staying in Ukraine, you should register your presence here. Please follow the travel advice issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The government recommends that British nationals in Ukraine should leave now while commercial means are still available, as there will not be other options or assistance to leave in the event of an invasion.

If you are resident in Bristol West (check here) and having difficulties leaving Ukraine, or getting your family to safety, please get in touch. Members of Parliament have some channels to government officials which can help in times of crisis.
