I’m pleased to announce that I have once again been selected as Labour candidate for Bristol West in the next General Election, after comprehensively winning all of a series of votes among local Labour Party members and affiliate organisations.
Labour Party rules require ballots of all the branches (corresponding to council wards) and affiliated organisations to decide whether a sitting MP will stand as a Labour candidate in the next election, or whether to have full open reselection process.
I won across all branches and affiliated organisations which returned a quorate vote – eight out of ten branches and twenty-two out of twenty-five affiliates. The remaining branches were not quorate and the remaining affiliates did not return a ballot in time.
Bristol West was one of the first constituencies to go through this round of trigger ballots. All Constituency Labour Parties (CLPs) with a sitting MP will follow suit over 2022.
I am grateful for all Labour members who voted overwhelmingly to keep me as Labour candidate in the next election. I am pleased to have the support of all Labour Party branches and affiliate organisations in my constituency of Bristol West.
I look forward to representing Labour in the next General Election, whenever it comes. The Labour Party is ready to replace the corrupt and self-serving Tories with a progressive and dynamic government.
NOTES:
- A total of 257 individual members voted. 234 members voted to reselect me without proceeding to a full selection. 22 voted for a full selection, and 2 abstained.
- Amongst the 25 affiliated organisations all 22 received before the deadline were cast in favour of automatically reselecting me as Bristol West Labour candidate.
