People in Bristol West, business owners, musicians, cafe staff, and others are all contacting me, worried sick about a loss of work because of lack of clarity from the government. On Politics Live today, I was shown a tweet by journalist Matt Dathan, who said “the Association of British Insurance has put out a statement saying standard business interruption cover – which a majority of firms purchase – does not include forced closure by authorities.” This is unacceptable as this is exactly why people and businesses pay for insurance.

In any case there are individuals who are going to be affected and so as a matter of priority the state must support the millions of people who are at financial risk due to the COVID-19 crisis. In my constituency this means particularly in the creative, hospitality, and entertainment industries in the UK. The future of these businesses, their workers, independent contractors and the many supply chains are dependent on a clear statement of support from the government. This must happen imminently. I will watch the Chancellors announcement this evening with close attention and if he is found wanting I will be campaigning.
