The Health Secretary Matt Hancock has just given a statement to the House of Commons which was a repeat of the statement given by the Prime Minister earlier in the first of his daily press conferences. Matt Hancock is still answering questions from MPs and the PM took questions from journalists.

You can read the full statement here.

Key points:

  1.  Anyone with a high temperature or new and continuous cough should stay at home for 14 days and so should anyone living with them. They should leave the home only for exercise and avoid any contact with others when they do.
  2. Everyone should avoid unnecessary social contact and all unnecessary travel.
  3. By this weekend, everyone with the most serious health conditions should be largely shielded from social contact for 12 weeks. If you are receiving treatment for a serious health condition you may need to consult your doctor.

They also said that “from tomorrow we will be withdrawing our support for mass gatherings”. Lots of you who work in events, entertainment, hospitality, catering and so on have asked me to ensure that this means a clear ban, otherwise you may not be able to claim insurance. In any case, others of you will be concerned that you are not covered whether or not there is a ban.
