BREAKING: Parliament has just voted overwhelmingly to effectively prevent the new Prime Minister from suspending our sovereign parliament in order to crash the country out of the EU without a deal.

Many of you have told me you wanted me to do everything in my power to stop Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt from riding roughshod over our democracy and proroguing Parliament with no mandate whatsoever. I am proud to have announced the result of the vote which retains MPs’ ability to have a democratic say over the future of our relationship with the EU.

This vote was the result of a lot of hard work from myself and my colleagues in the Labour Whips office. It involved lots of communication with our colleagues in the Lords, with our frontbench teams, with MPs who put forward these amendments and – crucially – with Tory MPs and ministers who voted against their own government’s instructions.

This is not the end of the road, but it is an important step in helping to avert a catastrophic no-deal departure from the EU. Whether you voted leave or remain, you did not vote to have an unelected Prime Minister hijack your democratic representatives. I am proud I have helped to frustrate this threat.
