I was shocked to hear of the murder of Jamel Powell in the Blue Mountain Club at the weekend. I offer Jamal’s family my heartfelt condolences.
I have been in regular contact with the police since the incident and I’m pleased to hear that their prompt action has now resulted in two men being charged with Jamel’s murder. They appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court this morning (2 January).

Knife crime is a terrible blight on our city. I recognise that there are not easy solutions, but everyone should take note of the dreadful, heartbreaking consequences of carrying knives as lethal weapons.
Several lives are now ruined or changed forever by this incident. Knife crime is robbing mothers and fathers of their children, sisters of their brothers, friends of their friends; and I will do all I can to support the police in their work to stamp it out.
