Question to the Secretary of State for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport on Thursday 21 December 2017

Thangam at DCMS questionsOn Thursday 21 December, I asked the Secretary of State for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport to comment on what is noticeably absent from the government's analysis of the effects of Brexit on key UK industries. Namely, any indication of an impact assessment on the creative industries. This question session took place just before the government published their ‘sectoral analyses’, when they were bafflingly still under embargo.

I think it's important that the government know what effects Brexit will have on major industries that are central to Bristol's economy.

You can read the sectoral analysis for the creative industries here. There are statistics taken from the public domain to describe the contribution the creative sector makes to the UK economy. There is also a list of EU legislation that affects the industry. But there is absolutely no analysis, no modelling, no attempt to predict what impact us leaving the EU (or the single market or customs union) will have on our creative industries.

This is just to take one sector that is important to Bristol West. But you might want to take a look at other reports on aerospace, aviation, broadcasting, medical services and social care, higher education and tourism. I'm keen to hear your views on what the government have produced.

Whether you voted leave or remain, you deserve better than the Tories' shambolic and cavalier approach to Brexit. This is potentially one of the biggest economic upheavals this country has embarked on in living memory, and the government haven't even taken the time to do their homework properly.

I refer the House to my entry in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests. Given that we are not allowed to talk about what is in the Brexit sectoral analyses over the road at 100 Parliament Street, will the Secretary of State say what is not in them in relation to the creative industries?

I do not think there is anything that is not in there. The creative industries work with us, and these are sectorial [sic] analyses that set out the analysis we have made as Government, working with the industry. I am sorry to disappoint the hon. Lady at Christmastime if she feels that she is missing something, and I hope that when Christmas comes it will provide everything she is looking for.
