It’s not just opposition politicians asking this. The Lords’ International Relations Committee recently concluded that British arms sold to Saudi Arabia are being used to kill civilians in Yemen. The Committee, made up of a cross-party group of peers, also stated that selling weapons to Saudi Arabia is probably illegal, recommending the immediate suspension of some export licences.

The Foreign Secretary dodged my question, instead speaking about the process for gathering advice. But this is not the point. As he says, it is up to government ministers to grant licences.

When he makes these decisions, the Foreign Secretary should consider the situation in Yemen. Six years of war have left 10,000 people dead, two million displaced and 8.4 million at risk of famine. We should suspend the sale of all arms fuelling this humanitarian disaster.
