Today in Parliament we have been debating the desperate situation of refugees and asylum seekers in Sri Lanka. Many of these people have previously fled violence and persecution in Pakistan and Afghanistan. After the shocking terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka, these people are facing anti-Muslim persecution and once again running for their lives.

During the debate, the Foreign Office minister mentioned that there 412 of these refugees in the UN resettlement process right now. I would like to know how many of these people we will give refuge to in the UK.

We are living through a global refugee crisis. Around the world, the number of people forced from their homes is now higher than the population of the UK. People in the UK are compassionate and want to help those who are fleeing persecution and war, yet we take a disproportionately low number of these refugees. We can and should do more.
