Andy Burnham

Andy Burnham, Shadow Secretary of State for Health, came to Bristol West this morning to help with Thangam’s campaign.

About 40 members met for their pre-canvass breakfast at the Boston Tea Party on the Gloucester Road.

Andy joined them and chatted and answered their questions about the NHS.

Then he went to the Street Stall, meeting more supporters and members of the public.

He repeated his commitment to abolishing the Health and Social Care Act as soon as Labour gets into office, saying “Every day this Act is in place the NHS drifts further from its core purpose. We can’t take another five years of a Tory-led Government. We must win in Bristol West and other target seats to save the NHS.”

Countering the view that privatisation has increased only slightly under the Coalition he said, “In the last year, 40% of new contracts have gone to private companies and only 41% to the NHS. That is the scale and speed of the change they have brought about.”

He also pointed out that, at the last election, not one Lib Dem voter in Bristol West had given the Lib Dems a mandate to put the NHS up for sale and that’s why we need to beat the Lib Dems as well as the Tories. He said, “After what they have done to the NHS, May 7th will be Cameron and Clegg’s day of reckoning.”
